3. SURFACE PREPARATION 表面处理
A. General
通用
(1) Metal surfaces must have a pretreatment before you can apply these coatings. Unless shown differently, and unless there are bare spots from clamps, metal surfaces must also have a layer of primer before you can apply these coatings, unless the new coating is a primer.

(2) Parts with chromic acid anodize (BAC5019), boric acid-sulfuric acid anodize (BAC5632), or sulfuric acid anodize (BAC5022), all without a seal:

(a) You must start to apply primer to these parts within the time limit specified in the applicable anodize specification.

(b) If these parts become dirty or contaminated, you cannot clean them, but light surface particles that are not oily can be removed by compressed air.

(c) If the time limit is expired, or if the parts become dirty or contaminated before the primer can be applied, replace the anodize as specified in the applicable anodize specification.

(3) Do not apply masking tape to anodized surfaces that do not have a seal or layer of primer.

B. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 27 coating.

(a) If the overhaul instructions do not specify the pretreatment and primer:

1) Apply Alodine 1000 as specified in BAC5719, Type 2 (SOPM 20-43-03).

(2) Surfaces with primer or topcoat (but not topcoat force dried at 110°F or higher) less than 48 hours old:

(a) If the surface is dirty, solvent clean as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

NOTE: The applied BAC5710, Type 27 coating is dry-hard when the Teflon stylus of a BYK-Gardner (V0GZW7) circular drying time recorder DG-9601 or DG-9611 does not break or dent the layer, but moves freely upon the surface.

(3) Surfaces with primer or topcoat more than 48 hours old, or surfaces with topcoat force dried at 110°F or higher of any age:

(a) Solvent clean as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

(4) Metal surfaces where BMS 10-86 Teflon filled coating is specified, but the primer is not specified:

(a) Apply one layer of BMS 10-79, Type 3 primer as specified in BAC5882 (SOPM 20-44-04) to each bare fastener surface or to each row of bare fastener surfaces.

(b) As an alternative, if BMS 10-11, Type 1 primer was applied to the part at the detail level, apply one layer of BMS 10-11, Type 1 primer as specified in BAC5736 (SOPM 20-41-02) to each bare fastener surface or to each row of bare fastener surfaces.

C. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 31 coating.

(1) Fully wet-sand the surface with 280 grit or finer abrasive paper.

(2) Solvent clean (SOPM 20-30-03).

D. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 39 coating.
为 BAC5710 39 型涂层准备表面。
(1) Aluminum surfaces

(a) Polish the area to be coated with abrasive cloth, 220 grit or finer.
用 220 grit 或更细的砂布抛光待涂层区域。
(b) Chemical treat or anodize the surface to be treated.

(c) Apply one layer of BMS 10-11, Type 1 primer (SOPM 20-41-02).

NOTE: Zinc chromate primer can be used if specified in the applicable overhaul instructions, but then the finish will not be resistant to BMS 3-11 hydraulic fluid.

(d) Let the primer dry a minimum of 1 hour at room temperature, or 15 minutes at 145-155°F.

(2) Steel surfaces:

(a) Prepare the surface and apply one layer of BMS 10-11, Type 1 primer (SOPM 20-41-02).

(3) Painted surfaces:

(a) Clean and activate epoxy type primer layers, before you apply the coating, as follows:

1) If the primer layer is less than 48 hours old, wipe the surface with clean wipers wet with toluene. Wipe dry immediately. Do not let the solvent evaporate on the surface.

2) If the primer layer is more than 48 hours old, wipe the surface with clean wipers wet with toluene or MIBK and sand lightly with 320 grit or finer abrasive cloth. Remove all sanding residue with wipers wet with MIBK.

(b) Clean and activate zinc chromate primer layers, before you apply the coating, as follows:

1) If the zinc chromate primer is less than 72 hours old, wipe with clean wipers wet with cleaning solvent.

2) If the zinc chromate primer is more than 72 hours old, sand lightly with 320 grit or finer abrasive cloth and remove all residue with clean wipers wet with toluene.

E. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 41 coating.

(1) Solvent clean as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

F. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 44 coating.

(1) Solvent clean the primer layer (SOPM 20-30-03) if the primer is more than 24 hours old or if it is dirty.

(2) Reactivate the primer layer as follows:

(a) Epoxy primer layers not over 48 hours old: Wipe with clean wipers wet with toluene. Wipe dry before the solvent evaporates.

(b) Epoxy primer layers over 48 hours old: Wipe with toluene, MEK or TL-52 thinner, then lightly sand with 320 grit or finer abrasive paper. Remove all sanding residue with wipers wet with methyl isobutyl ketone. Wipe dry before the solvent evaporates.

NOTE: Abrasion resistant finishes applied over zinc chromate primers are not BMS 3-11 resistant.

G. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 47 coating.
准备 BAC5710 47 型涂层的表面。
(1) Dry abrasive blast clean as specified in BAC5748 (SOPM 20-30-03) with 80-120 mesh aluminum oxide or garnet.
按照 BAC5748(SOPM 20-30-03)的规定,用 80-120 目氧化铝或石榴石进行干式喷砂清洁。
(2) Remove the dust with filtered compressed air, or wipe it off with a clean, dry wiper or tack rag.

H. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 49 coating.
准备 BAC5710,类型49 涂层的表面。
(1) Solvent clean as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

(2) For all surfaces but plated metal, dry abrasive blast as specified in BAC5748 (SOPM 20-30-03). Do not abrasive blast plated metal.

(3) Remove the dust with compressed air.

I. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 51 coating.

(1) Unsealed anodized aluminum: Prepare as specified in Paragraph 3.A.

(2) Pretreated metal surfaces (other than unsealed anodized aluminum):

(a) If the surface has only particulate contamination, clean with a new tack rag or compressed air.

J. Prepare the surface for BAC5710, Type 53 coating.

NOTE: This coating is usually applied over BAC5710, Type 51 primer coating or BMS 10-21, Type 3 anti-static coating or BMS 10-79, Type 3 primer.

(1) Surfaces with BAC5710, Type 51 primer cured 2-24 hours:

(a) If the surface becomes contaminated, solvent clean it as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

(c) Remove the sanding dust with solvent as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03)

(d) Apply a new layer of BAC5710, Type 51 primer.

(e) Air dry the primer for a minimum of 30 minutes before you apply the enamel.

(3) Surfaces with BMS 10-21, Type 3 coating 24 hours old or less

(a) If the surface becomes contaminated, solvent clean it with naphtha as specified in BAC5750 (SOPM 20-30-03).

(d) Apply a new layer of BMS 10-21, Type 3 coating (BAC5639). Let the coating air cure 2-24 hours before you apply the BAC5710, Type 51 coating.

(5) Surfaces with BMS 10-79, Type 3 primer 72 hours old or less:

4. MIXING 混合
A. Shake or stir the materials before you mix them together.

B. For BAC5710, Type 31, mix the aluminum powder into the clear base. Mix in the catalyst and thinner immediately before application. Put the material through a paint strainer. Shake continuously during application, because the powder settles quickly.

C. For BAC5710, Type 64 coating:

(1) Let refrigerated material warm to 65-90°F before you open the container, to prevent moisture condensation.

(2) Immediately before you use the material, fully mix each container on a vibrating or rotating paint mixer. Mix quart-size containers for 5 minutes minimum. 7. REWORK AND REPAIR 返工和修理

(2) Remove grease with VM&P naphthas. Do not damage the surface.

C. Processing systems

(1) If clamps must be used to hold parts, use a minimum number of contact points necessary for good mechanical support. When possible, put the contact points in trim or tab areas.

(2) Bare spots caused by clamps that touch the part can stay without touch-up if the spots are no larger than 0.094 inch wide in any direction; one contact point can be up to 0.125 inch wide in any direction.

(7) After full cure, if there are appearance problems in the feathered edge areas because of rough dry overspray, you can lightly sand the areas with Scotch-Brite pads or 280 grit of finer aluminum oxide abrasive paper or cloth.

(9) If the dry film thickness is too thin and the time since the last layer is less that 48 hours, prepare the surface as specified in Paragraph 3.B.(2), then mix, apply and cure one more layer of Type 27 coating.
