A. In a not pressurized condition, the poppet of the HALON Pressure Reducer is held in open position by the spring force of the pressure adjustment spring.

B. If a pressurized gas flows through the inlet port, and the outlet end of the system is closed with a valve, it pressurizes the diaphragm, generating a counter-force against the pressure adjustment spring force.

C. The pin moves down guiding the poppet into the sealing orifice. The poppet will close the flow inside the HALON Pressure Reducer. At the same time the pin moves down and the poppet assembly closes by its spring force.
E. When the downstream side of the system is opened, the gas flows out. The pressure to the diaphragm and thus the counter-force against the pressure adjustment spring force is released.

F. Because of the higher pressure adjustment spring force, the pin moves the poppet up, and new gas flows into the unit.

G. With a steady flow through the HALON Pressure Reducer, the operating force balance between the adjustment spring, the diaphragm, and the poppet spring is set. This balance will fix the poppet at the required position to provide the pressure drop, and gas flow, needed.
The HALON Pressure Reducer is a mechanical device which has the function to decrease the high pressure of gases or liquids to a lower constant operating system pressure. This unit operates independently on the entry pressure or flow changes. The HALON Pressure Reducer installed in the aircraft is a part of the flow metering system of the fire extinguishing system for cargo compartments. HALON 1301 (CBrF3) gas is used in the fire extinguishing system. The gas is let out flow metered by interaction of the pressure reducer with a specific diaphragm.
A flow metering system is installed on the discharge outlets of bottle 2. It makes sure that a constant flow is maintained for 240 minutes. The FMS is composed of a check valve, a halon filter, a restrictor, a pressure reducer and a pressure switch. The discharge pressure switch sends a signal to the SDCU when a flow of the bottle agent is detected in the flow metering system.
